Health Cooperatives - An idea from UgandaThis is a featured page

After waiting many years for government to provide to provide health care, people in remote villages in Uganda decided to take matters into their own hands. They rejected the charity model, in which everything is provided by distant benefactors. Experience has shown that outright charity does not work, because such aid is often based on the assumptions of the donors, and the affected people have limited say and no buyin. Instead, they created health cooperatives in which people contribute a small (relatively) sum of money every few months, to maintain astock of medications, surgical suppliesand more, in preparation for that unexpected illness. This has been a lifesaver, in parts of Uganda where people often die of easily-treated or preventable conditions.

A report on National Public Radio (NPR)

This is one of the models that could be adopted in the Southern Cameroons, to improve the accessibility and effectiveness of health care.
